Breaking contact with a monster
How to get out of a monster's sight in R.E.P.O. — and what to do when running is not enough — using how it sees, how it takes damage and when it gives up.

Before you start
- A run with a monster awake
- Something to hit with, or objects to throw
- A level with somewhere to break line of sight
Steps
- Change your posture before you change your distance.
how visible a player is has separate values for standing, crouching and crawling - Know that how many sightings it takes differs by posture too.
the number of sightings needed to trigger is separate for standing, crouching and crawling - Put distance between you and the point it sees from, not between you and the model.
a monster has a vision point and a vision distance of its own, with a closer distance for a crouching player - Do not treat objects as cover.
objects are seen as well, with their own value and a radius that can be overridden - Hit it if you can, because it can be hurt rather than only avoided.
a monster carries a health total and impacts hurt it with separate damage for a light, a medium and a heavy one - Throw something when your weapon is out of the picture.
being hurt by an object has its own switch, a multiplier and an option to stun - Use a pit if the level has one.
a monster checks whether it is over a pit, with transforms, a distance and a direction of its own - Expect the chase to end by itself rather than lasting the whole run.
a chase despawns after a time, and a monster that is stuck despawns with a count of its own
Common mistakes
- Backing away while standing upright, which keeps you as visible as you were.
- Hiding behind an object a monster can see just as easily as it sees you.
- Running with an empty weapon instead of throwing what is in reach.
- Assuming a monster that has stopped chasing has left the level.
