The extending ladder
The ladder is a carried item rather than level scenery.
The ladder in R.E.P.O. is not a fixed prop: the game ships it as a carried item that extends a bridge of its own, uses a battery, and can be switched off again.

- The ladder has a top pivot and a bottom transform, a collider pivot, a ground collision check and a grab icon of its own, with on and off physics sounds. (checked against the game's own files)
- Retracting has a sound of its own, the bridge has a loop, and being refused has a sound and a flag. (checked against the game's own files)
In play
The ladder is something you carry. The game ships it as an item rather than a piece of level scenery, which is why a route up is something the crew brings with them.
It extends a bridge. The ladder has its own bridge and a pivot for it, so what it makes is a surface you can cross rather than only a set of steps.
Extending is a state you control. The game keeps an extended and an unextended state with their own sounds, so the ladder can be put away again rather than left out.
It costs battery to use. Extending drains a battery at a rate of its own and takes a set amount per extension, which is why reaching a high place is a decision about charge.
It grips. The ladder has sticky material settings alongside its ordinary one, which is why it can hold on where it is placed instead of sliding.
It knows where it can stand. The game keeps collision checks and a collider of its own, so the ladder extends against something rather than through it.
Every end of it has an anchor. There is a pivot at the top and a transform at the bottom, a pivot for the collider and a check for the ground under it, along with a grab icon of its own and separate physics sounds for being on and off.
Putting it away is sounded as well. Retracting has a sound of its own and the bridge has a loop, while being refused has a sound and a flag rather than failing silently.
What this entry does not tell you: how far it reaches, how long a battery lasts, or how much it costs. We have not verified those numbers, so we do not print them.
