Spending tokens without regretting it
How to approach the cosmetic machine in R.E.P.O. so a token is a decision rather than a reflex.
Applies to
0.4.0, read from the copy of the game this site was built from (see the sources page)
Before you start
- A shop with the cosmetic machine in it
- Currency to spend
- A rough idea of which part of your avatar you want to change
Steps
- Treat the machine as a dispenser with a sequence rather than as a shelf.
it is run by an animator that points back at the machine, so what it does is a sequence with a beginning and a payoff - Expect a token at one of four grades rather than a named item.
the game keeps cosmetic tokens in four grades, each with its own colouring - Judge the pull after the display has come to rest, not while it is spinning.
the screen spins and then settles on a separate transform with its own curve - Look at what you already own before spending again.
a cosmetic can be hidden again rather than only collected, so owning one is not the same as wearing it - Check which part of the avatar the cosmetic lands on.
the avatar is split into parts such as the head, the body, an arm and a leg, each carrying a default surface - Pick cosmetic objects up from the floor through their own interface.
cosmetic objects in the world have an interface of their own, and tokens have one as well
Common mistakes
- Spending for a named cosmetic when the machine hands over a token at a grade.
- Judging a pull before the display has settled.
- Buying a second copy of something you already own and have only hidden.
- Forgetting that a cosmetic is laid over one part of the avatar rather than the whole figure.
